I just got a new lap top and I refuse to use McAfee because last time I got a virus inside of it. I heard AVG is really good is this true?
AVG also has a version that you can pay for as well as anti-spyware. How good is that?

When you ask a question like this, the answers will all be different when it comes down to it, there is no “best anti virus program” it is all a matter of personal choice. Me personally I use
1 Ad-Aware 2008, its free and pretty effective, and simple.
2 Spybot – Search & Destroy, its a little out of date but it works.
3 SpywareBlaster, blocks potentially damaging applications and programs from running.
4 Simple File Shredder, it isn’t an anti spy, but it shreds unnecessary files including cookies and it speeds up system performance.
5 MRU-Blaster, detects and cleans MRU (most recently used) lists on your computer. By looking at these MRU lists, someone could determine what files you opened/saved/looked at, what their file names were, and much more! (And, in many cases, the lists are displayed in drop-down menus automatically.) (From website.)
I personally don’t like AVG it screwed up my computer after I Un-Installed it, and avast didn’t work for me.
AVG is not good
it is designed free because all it does is that it changes the virus from a program that extracts viruses to a little file.
i preffer Symantec cooperation
AVG is the biggest free anti virus there is…does an ok job…but for free, you can’t expect more right?
also for what their worth, download spybot search and destroy, and ad aware 2008….they are also free…
seriously: for realtime protection i definately recommend this:
Webroot Spysweeper….this is a top rated product by PC Magazine, etc.
does a great job catching stuff that the free stuff doesn’t catch.
spend the money it’s worth it….
I would recommend esset NOD 32, it is good anti-virus and the main thing it doesn’t take to much system resources. Their site
i personally use norton antivirus
It depends on whether you want to pay money or not.
If you are going to pay, get either Kaspersky or NOD32.They are the best available, but neither one is cheap. But if you are going to pay money, you shouldn’t skimp on this.
For free, use either AVG or Avast for an anti-virus. I hear Avast is the better of the two from some. But it is a matter of personal prefrence over the two.
For spyware/adware Webroot is the best if you want to pay, but Kaspersky and NOD offer just as good protection with their security suite.
For free antispy software get Spybot: Search and Destory. It gets rid spyware and adware and can help prevent it. Ad-Aware is great for getting rid of it but you have to pay for Adwatch to help prevent it. I don’t recommend Adwatch. For that get Spyware Blaster it helps prevent spyware and it’s easy to update.
Summary: For pay, get Nod32 or Kaspersky. For free, get Avast, Spybot, and SpywareBlaster.
Having seen Symantec and MacAfee both repeatedly not notice killer viruses which locked up my laptop, I question what they are good for. It appears that many or most of today’s viruses are created by the companies which suddenly pop up to get rid of them, for a continuing price! The lawless nature of today’s internet is to blame. The solution I have found is to first attempt to clear lockup viruses by both unplugging power and brief battery removal, which usually works. When it doesn’t, holding down the F11 while hitting the power “on” button, perhaps having to “woodpecker” both keys to get it started for a “destructive restoration”, and selecting Advanced Procedures, lets one start over completely clean. Two caveats, one, that a person needs to make a separate monthly backup on flash drive or CD of all important files, and two, that one should have a hardcopy list of all important downloads to once again download after “cleaning house”. Also, sometimes the box temporarily works well enough after a battery pull, that a person can make a quick “backup onto flash drive” of files before the virus locks up things again, but often not. On the upside, many choices of what to do setting up a computer may have changed with personal experience, and one can do things a “better way”. On the downside, Microsoft has feloniously taken to downgrading XP computers through phony automatic upgrades, to improve sales of Vista. If it gets much worse, it will be worth one’s while to Destructively Reboot and NOT click the “automatic upgrades permitted” icon. The original XP is arguably better than where things seem to be headed lately! Good Luck. Regards, Larry.
